The Norman Castle was commissioned in 1080 by Roberto il Guiscardo and built by Riccardo d'Altavilla, to defend the Saracen invasions, dominates the three sides of the Gravina di Ginosa and is connected to the main street of the town.
In the 16th century, when the barony of Ginosa passed to the Doria family, the crenellated towers were demolished in order to transform the castle into a noble residence.
Only the rear part, the one we see in the picture, did not undergo any changes, thus maintaining the Norman style that we can still admire today.
It is very important to point out that the city of Ginosa never needed a castle because there was no local feudal lord and there were no military structures to defend, in fact a castrum was built, a fortified tower.
